1.5 Prerequisites/Preconditions

To establish a DirectPlay 8 Protocol connection, the consuming application on one computer system has to be listening for a new incoming connection or connections; that is, to be functioning as a server in traditional networking parlance. The application on another computer system has to discover this server via external means, such as through a game server list or a local area network (LAN) broadcast discovery that uses the DirectPlay 8 Host and Port Enumeration Protocol.
