1 Introduction

This File System Management Overview describes the purpose and use of the protocols that are required for remote administration and management of file servers in an organization.

The system administrator uses an administrative client to configure and query the state of file services, such as Distributed File System (DFS) and File Replication Service (FRS). The administrator can also use the administrative client to configure various policies that apply to the object store on a file server, such as disk quotas to set limits on user disk space use, screening and filtering to restrict the type of content that can be stored, and other policies. Users and applications access these services through file clients. File client and file access protocols are described in the File Access Services Protocol Overview ([MS-FASOD]).
