1.4 Relationship to Other Protocols

NBNS server-to-server replication uses TCP as the transport for its replication messages, as specified in section 3.1. NBNS also uses UDP as the transport for its discovery messages, as specified in section 2.1.

NetBT protocol, as specified in [RFC1001] and [RFC1002], is dependent on the NBNS server-to-server replication protocol for consistent NetBIOS name resolution.

The NBNS replication and AutoDiscovery protocol is only for use by NetBT clients.
