Planning Phase

The primary focus in this phase is to determine which elements of user state to migrate to new systems. The User State Migration feature team will use assessments that the Application Compatibility feature team performs and input from customer subject matter experts (SMEs) to create a list of application settings and data to be migrated. They team will then make a plan to create control files that will migrate all required settings and data.

Complete an application inventory.

Working with the Application Compatibility feature team, complete an inventory of all applications that store user state data, such as data files and user-specific application settings.

Prepare a migration plan.

Develop a plan to migrate user state data, including which user state data will be migrated and where data will reside during migration.

Developing Phase

The following checklist describes the high-level steps in the Developing Phase.

Control files developed.

Design Microsoft Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) Scanstate and Loadstate .xml control files to control the operation of the USMT during the migration process.

Previous version control files migrated.

Convert any control files used in previous versions of the USMT.

Stabilizing Phase

Below are the major steps that the User State Migration feature team must accomplish during the Stabilizing Phase.

Test USMT control files.

Test migration control files to ensure that user state migrates successfully under a wide range of likely scenarios.

Update deployment servers with tested control files.

When the User State Migration feature team has tested and accepted the control files, the files can reside on the servers that the team will use for the deployment.

Deploying Phase

The User State Migration feature team hands off to the Deployment feature team in this phase.
