There are several log files that might be helpful when troubleshooting agent issues. Look for log files on both the agent computer and on the Agent Manager computer.

Agent Computer Log Files

The agent computer stores an installation log file. The location and name of this log file depends on how the agent was installed. If the agent was installed by the Agent Manager, the installation log file (InstallServcie.log) is saved to the following directory within the Program Files directory:

\Program Files\Microsoft Operations Manager 2000\OnePoint\InstallService.log

If the agent was manually installed, the installation log file (AgentInstall.log) is saved to the following directory within the Program Files directory:

\Program Files\Microsoft Operations Manager 2000

Additionally, if you install the agent manually, an installation text file is saved to the Temp folder of the user who installed the agent:

\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\Microsoft\AgntInst.txt

However, if installation fails, this log file might be located in a different directory. For example, this log file might be placed in \Documents and Setting\username\Local Settings\Temp.

Agent Manager Log Files

You can also get more information about agent installation issues by reviewing the Agent Manager installation log files on the Agent Manager computer. The Agent Manager creates a log file for each individual agent (agent_name.log). Log files are located in the following folders:

  • \Program Files\Operations Manager 2000\OnePoint\InstallService\ComputerLogs

  • \Program Files\Operations Manager 2000\OnePoint\InstallMcsApps\Operations Agent\ComputerLogs

The agent installation log files on the Agent Manager include the following information:

  • Services that are installed

  • Registry values that are created

  • Directories that are created

  • Files that are copied onto the agent computer

  • The associated date and time stamps for each action
