Browser support for digital asset management
Applies To: Dynamics Marketing
Important
Microsoft Dynamics Marketing has been discontinued and is no longer available. All customer data related to this product has been permanently deleted from all Microsoft servers and is no longer available for extraction. This documentation is being provided for historical purposes only.
All digital asset management features are now provided as HTML5, using techniques that are supported by all modern browsers. However, in previous versions of Microsoft Dynamics Marketing, some or all of these features relied on Microsoft Silverlight technology to create the user interface. Silverlight is now being phased out, and the newest versions of some web browsers already cannot run it. Therefore, nearly all of the features that used to rely on Silverlight have been re-created in HTML5; the small differences that remain are summarized in the following table.
Feature |
Silverlight |
HTML5 |
|---|---|---|
File browser |
Full support |
Full support, but some features (a few view options and A/V annotation) are deprecated and won’t be ported to HTML5. See the remaining rows of this table for details. |
Library browser |

Document and image file annotation |

Full support |
Upload by dragging files directly from Windows Explorer to the Dynamics Marketing file or library browser |
Full support, with each upload starting immediately |
Full support, but the procedure is slightly different. In the HTML5 version, a file-upload pop-up window opens showing a list of files to be uploaded. Use this window to review and/or add to your uploads before committing them (you can also drag and drop into this window), and then click Upload to complete the process. |
Annotation of audio/visual files |
Support for timeline-based annotation of several audio and video formats |
No support. This feature is not often used and is not planned to be ported to HTML5. |
View options in the file and library browsers |
Three view options are available (list, small thumbnails, and large thumbnails) |
Two view options are available (List and thumbnails). |
File annotations across file versions |
You can change the version you are annotating from within the annotation interface |
You must choose a file version before opening the annotation interface, which always operates on the version at the top of the version column on the file Properties page. Usually the latest version is shown at the top of the column. To annotate an older version, start by clicking it in the version column, which will move that version to the top. |
Searching, sorting, grouping, and filtering of files in the file and library browsers |
Search, sort, group, and filter |
Search and sort only |
In the current version of Dynamics Marketing, the HTML5 interface is shown in all browsers, even where Silverlight is installed. However, you can ask to have the Silverlight activated for your instance if you need A/V annotation, or if you have been using the Silverlight interface until now and prefer it. We otherwise recommend the HTML5 interface for all customers. If you decide to use Silverlight on your instance, then users that have Silverlight installed will see the Silverlight interface, but all other users will see the HTML5 interface automatically.
As of this writing, Silverlight is supported by the current versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox, but not by current versions of Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. For an up-to-date list of browser support, go to the Silverlight download page. If you’e using a browser that does support Silverlight but does’t have it installed, then you can use that same link to install it.
Please contact Microsoft Support if you’d like to have the Silverlight interface enabled for your instance.
