Set Up E-Mail on a Nokia (Symbian) Mobile Phone

If you’re using a supported Nokia device that’s running the Symbian operating system, you can use the Nokia e-mail application, Mail for Exchange, to set up your e-mail using Exchange ActiveSync. When you use Exchange ActiveSync, you can access your account information, including e-mail messages, calendar entries, contacts, and task information.

For information about which Nokia devices support Mail for Exchange, or for information about how to set up a POP or IMAP connection to your account, see “What else do I need to know” later in this topic.

If your Nokia phone is a Windows Phone, see Set Up Exchange ActiveSync E-Mail on Windows Phone.

How do I set up Exchange ActiveSync on a Nokia (Symbian)?

  1. On the Applications menu, select Applications > Mail.

  2. Select Create a new mailbox to start the setup wizard.

  3. Accept the Nokia terms of service and select Start.

  4. Select Mail for Exchange from the list of available account types, and then enter the following information:

    1. In the Password box, enter your account password.

    2. In the Username box, enter your user name, for example, tony@contoso.com.

    3. In the Domain box, enter your domain. Your domain is the part of your e-mail address that follows the at sign (@) and precedes the period, for example, contoso.

    4. Select Next to continue. The setup wizard will try to automatically set up your e-mail account.

  5. If the wizard is able to set up your account, go to the next step. If this process can’t be completed automatically, you’ll need to enter your Exchange server name manually. In the Mail for Exchange server name box, enter your server name, and select Next. For instructions for locating your server name, see the Finding my server name section.

  6. Select OK when Mail for Exchange informs you that it isn’t recommended to use multiple methods to synchronize your contacts with your phone.

  7. Choose whether you want to synchronize your Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks by selecting the appropriate options and then selecting Next.

    Note

Tasks are called to-do notes on the mobile phone.

  8. If there are existing contacts stored on the mobile phone, the setup wizard will ask you whether you want to keep the contacts on the phone or delete the existing contacts on the phone. Select either Keep on phone or Delete from phone. Once you’ve made this selection, synchronization will begin. It may take a few minutes for your messages, contacts, calendar, and task information to appear.

Finding my server name

If your email program isn't able to automatically find your Exchange ActiveSync server name, you may need to look it up.

  1. Sign in to your e-mail account using Outlook Web App. For help signing in, see How to Sign In to Outlook Web App.

  2. If you're connecting to an Exchange mailbox, your Exchange ActiveSync server name is contained in the address bar in your browser when you are signed in to Outlook Web App, but without the leading https:// and without the trailing /owa. For example, if the address you use to access Outlook Web App is https://mail.contoso.com/owa, your Exchange ActiveSync server name is mail.contoso.com.

  3. If you're unable to connect to your mailbox using the information earlier in this section, you can try using the server name value that you can view in Outlook Web App options. Do the following:

    1. In Outlook Web App, click Options > See All Options > Account > My Account > Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access.

      Note

Although you’re not setting up a POP3 account, you will use this value to determine your Exchange ActiveSync server name.

    2. Under POP setting, view the value for Server name.

    3. Try setting up your email using the server name listed on your options page. For example if the value for Server name under POP setting is mail.contoso.com, try using mail.contoso.com as your Exchange server name.

What else do I need to know?

  • For a list of Nokia devices compatible with Mail for Exchange, visit the Mail for Exchange page at the Nokia Web site. If you’re not using a supported device, see Set Up POP or IMAP E-Mail on an Internet-Capable Mobile Phone.

  • If you don't accept the policies sent to your mobile phone, you won't be able to access your information on your mobile phone.

  • If your e-mail account is the type that requires registration, you must register it the first time you sign in to Outlook Web App. Connecting to your e-mail account through a mobile phone will fail if you haven't registered your account through Outlook Web App. After you sign in to your account, sign out. Then try to connect using your mobile phone. For more information about how to sign in to your account using Outlook Web App, see How to Sign In to Outlook Web App. If you have trouble signing in, see FAQs: Sign-in and Password Issues or contact the person who manages your e-mail account.
