Money: Respond to a message about cookies or installing MSN Money software

In order to operate correctly, MSN Money software must save a cookie on your computer. If your computer doesn't accept cookies, you'll see the installation page every time you try to access a part of MSN Money that requires the software (for example, the Portfolio Manager in Investing).

To learn how to troubleshoot the error message, try any of the following options:

Make sure that your computer accepts cookies

There are several ways to configure your computer to accept cookies. First, try adding MSN Money to your browser's list of trusted sites. For more information, see Money: An error message about ActiveX controls appears.

If this does not solve the problem, and you are using or later, you can set Internet Explorer to accept all cookies.

  1. On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.

  2. On the Privacy tab, click Advanced.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Clear the Override automatic cookie handling check box.

    • Select the Override automatic cookie handling check box, and then under First-party cookies, select either Accept or Prompt.

If you set the cookie option to Prompt, be sure to accept the cookie when prompted.

If your computer settings allow cookies but you still see the software installation page, your MSN Money cookie file may be corrupted.

  • Remove and reinstall the controls to delete the damaged cookie. Tell me how.

Check that your system date is valid

  1. If you are running Windows, double-click the system time in the lower-right corner of the Windows taskbar.

  2. On the Date & Time tab, verify that the correct date, month, and year are displayed.

Check the settings on your antivirus program or your Internet "speed up" program

Some antivirus programs or Internet "speed up" programs can prevent software from saving a cookie on your computer.

  1. Turn off your antivirus program or Internet "speed up" program.

  2. Try downloading the MSN Money software again.

  3. Once the installation is complete, turn the antivirus or Internet "speed up" program back on again.
