Step 7: Verify Common Configuration

Now we will verify that our common configuration has been correctly configured and setup.

  • Verifying That New User information is Available in the FIM Portal

  • Verifying That AD Group information is Available in the FIM Portal

  • Verifying Access to the FIM Portal by the Newly Created Users

  • Create a Group as Britta Simon

  • Run the Management Agents

  • Send the new Distribution Group an Email

  • Verify the email was sent

Verifying That New User information is Available in the FIM Portal

In this section, you will ensure that Britta Simon and Lola Jacobson’s information is included in the FIM Portal as expected.

To verify new user information

  1. Log on to FIM1 as CORP\Administrator.

  2. In Internet Explorer, in the address bar at the top, enter https://fim1/identitymanagement and hit enter. This should bring up the Forefront Identity Manager 2010 page.

  3. On the home page, click Users, Profiles and Passwords.

  4. Click the Search icon on the Users page.

You should see Britta and Lola that you created earlier in this document.

Verifying That AD Group information is Available in the FIM Portal

In this section, you will ensure that the IT Discussion group is in the FIM Portal.

To Verifying That AD Group information is Available in the FIM Portal

  1. On the home page, click Distribution Groups (DGs).

  2. Click the Search icon on the Distribution Groups page.

You should see the IT Discussion DG that you created earlier in this document.

Verifying Access to the FIM Portal by the Newly Created Users

In this procedure you ensure that the new users can access information in the FIM Portal.

To verify access to the FIM portal

  1. Log on to CLIENT1 as CORP\bsimon

  2. In Internet Explorer, in the address bar at the top, enter https://fim1/identitymanagement and hit enter. This should bring up the Forefront Identity Manager 2010 page.

  3. Click Users, Profiles and Passwords on the home page.

  4. Click the Search icon on the Users page.

You should see Britta and Lola.

Create a Group as Britta Simon

Now we will have Britta create a group and add herself and Lola to the group.

To create a Group as Britta Simon

  1. Click Create a new DG on the home page. This will open the Create Distribution Group page.

  2. In the box next to Display Name enter International Sales Discussion

  3. In the box next to E-mail Alias enter ISD and click Next.

  4. On the Members tab, add Lola Jacobson and click Validate so that she resolves with an underline. Click Next.

  5. On the Owner tab click Next.

  6. On the Summary tab click Submit.

Run the Management Agents

Now we will run the management agents to synchronize and provision our newly created ISD group. Run the management agents in the order in the table below.

To run the AD MA

  1. Log on to FIM1 as CORP\Administrator

  2. Open the Synchronization Service Manager, and on the Tools menu, click Management Agents.

  3. For each row in the previous table, complete the following steps:

    1. In the Management Agents list, select the management agent shown for that row in the table.

    2. To open the Run Management Agent dialog box, on the Action menu, click Run.

    3. In the Run profiles list, select the run profile shown for that row in the table, and then click OK to start it.

Send the new Distribution Group an Email

Now that our group has been provisioned to AD we will verify that it functions correctly.

To Send the new Distribution Group an Email

  1. Log on to CLIENT1 as CORP\bsimon.

  2. Click Start, select All Programs, select Microsoft Office, and click Microsoft Outlook 2010.

  3. At the top of Outlook click New E-mail. The will bring up a new untitled email.

  4. Click To and select International Sales Discussion from the GAL. Click To again to add it to the To line. Click Ok.

  5. In the Subject line enter test.

  6. Click Send.

  7. Wait a second and you should see the email appear in Britta’s Inbox.

  8. Close Outlook. Log off of CLIENT1.

You should see Britta and Lola that you created earlier in this document.

Verify the email was sent

Now we will log on with Lola Jacobson and verify she received the new emal.

To verify the email was sent

  1. Log on to CLIENT1 as CORP\ljacobson.

  2. Click Start, select All Programs, select Microsoft Office, and click Microsoft Outlook 2010.

  3. You should see the email in Lola’s Inbox.

  4. Close Outlook. Log off of CLIENT1.

You should see Britta and Lola that you created earlier in this document.
