Team Foundation Data-Tier Servers
The Team Foundation data-tier server layer primarily consists of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 databases and data stores, Team Foundation databases, and Team Foundation stored procedures. You can deploy this layer with the Team Foundation application-tier layer on a single server (single-server deployment), or you can deploy this layer on a separate server from the Team Foundation application-tier (dual-server deployment). The Team Foundation data-tier server layer must be installed on Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, or on one of the Windows Server 2003 64-bit operating systems. It cannot be installed on Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.
Data-Tier Services and Applications
The Team Foundation data-tier server hosts the databases necessary for Team Foundation Server operations. The following services run on the Team Foundation data-tier server:
Microsoft SQL services, including the Analysis Server and SQL Browser services. These services run under Local System. All of the databases hosted on the Team Foundation data-tier are SQL databases, which require these SQL services for operation. The databases are:
Work item tracking database.
Source control database.
Team Foundation Common Services database.
Team Foundation Build database.
Reporting warehouse database.
Windows SharePoint Services database.
The size and scope of your Team Foundation Server deployment affect the hardware and software you need for the server hosting the Team Foundation data-tier server layer. For more information about Team Foundation data-tier server hardware requirements in either single-server or dual-server deployments, see Server Requirements for Team Foundation and Server Requirements for Team System.
