Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Enterprise Voice is Microsoft’s software-powered voice over IP (VoIP) solution. Enterprise Voice is a SIP-based, enterprise-level implementation of IP telephony that does not rely on proprietary hardware.

The supported Enterprise Voice configurations are as follows:

  • Coexistence of Office Communications Server and Private Branch eXchange (PBX)

    • Integration of Office Communications Server and a time division multiplexing (TDM) PBX through a media gateway
  • Office Communications Server alone

    • Departmental scenario (PBX in the organization, but not integrated with Enterprise Voice)

    • Greenfield scenario (no PBX in organization, integrated or otherwise, except for fax and other analog services)

To interface with the public switched telephone network (PSTN), all topologies require one of the following:

  • Basic media gateway. Mediation Server is separate from a media gateway.

  • Basic hybrid media gateway. Mediation Server is collocated with a media gateway.

  • Advanced media gateway. Mediation Server logic is integrated into a gateway; support for this configuration is planned.

  • SIP trunking. One or more Mediation Servers and a SIP trunking service provider, instead of an IP-PSTN gateway, provide PSTN support. For details about SIP trunking, see Planning for Voice in the Planning and Architecture documentation.

Integration with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging (UM) provides call answering, subscriber access, fax support, and auto attendant services to Office Communications Server Enterprise Voice deployments.
