[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to verify that the directory from which messages are picked up is not the same directory to which messages are queued for a specific SMTP virtual server. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the attribute for the Queue directory, which is msExchSmtpQueueDirectory, and the attribute for the Pickup directory, which is msExchSmtpPickupDirectory, are the same, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.
This error is a critical error. If the msExchSmtpQueueDirectory attribute and the msExchSmtpPickupDirectory attribute are set to the same directory, duplicate messages are delivered. You can update these attributes by using Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit.
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use ADSI Edit, the LDP (ldp.exe) tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.
To update the attribute for msExchSmtpPickupDirectory or msExchSmtpQueueDirectory by using ADSI Edit
Start the ADSI Edit tool from Windows® 2000 Support Tools or from Windows Server 2003 Support Tools.
Expand the following nodes:
In the details pane, right-click CN=1 (where 1 is the default SMTP virtual server), and then click Properties.
In the Select which properties to view list, click Both.
Update the attribute for msExchSmtpPickupDirectory so that it no longer conflicts with msExchSmtpQueueDirectory, and then click Set after you are finished.
Click OK, click Apply, and then close ADSI Edit.
Wait at least 15 minutes for replication.
