DSNs are currently being rendered as messages

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine if delivery status notifications (DSNs) on the Exchange Server computer are being rendered as standard messages:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\InternetContent\RenderDSNsAsMessages

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the RenderDSNsAsMessages registry entry present and configured with a value greater than 0, a non-default configuration message is displayed.

As its name implies, the RenderDSNsAsMessages registry entry represents a configuration opportunity that enables administrators to control how DSNs are rendered on Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 computers:

  • If the value data for RenderDSNsAsMessages is set to 0, DSNs (which include delivery reports and non-delivery reports) are rendered as standard MAPI messages.

  • If the value data for RenderDSNsAsMessages is set to any value greater than 0, DSNs are rendered as multipart/mixed MIME messages.

This registry value is not present by default and must be added manually to be used. In addition, for the entry to have the appropriate effect on Exchange 2000 Server, the computer must be running a minimum of the September 2003 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 Rollup.
