No remote servers or domains were available for DNS record tests

The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool tries to identify and build a list of the Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN), IP addresses, and domain names of remote servers that mail in a remote delivery queue is destined for.

The list of the FQDNs, IP addresses, and domain names of remote servers is built as follows:

  • The msExchSmtpFullyQualifiedDomainName property of the Active Directory® directory service object of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server is queried.


    The msExchSmtpFullyQualifiedDomainName property, in turn, is read from the msExchTargetBridgeheadServersDN property of a routing group connector directory object when that is queried for the designated target bridgehead servers

  • The msExchSmtpSmartHost property of the SMTP connector Active Directory object is queried for the designated smart host for an SMTP connector.

  • The LinkName property of the ExchangeLink Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class is queried for any remote server direct connections.

If the Exchange Server Analyzer determines that the attempt to build this list resulted in no entries, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.

This error indicates:

  • There may be intermittent network or Active Directory connection issues that are causing mail flow issues.

  • The account that runs the Exchange Server Analyzer may not have sufficient permissions to query for the information.

To correct this error

  1. Make sure that the Exchange Server computer has been started and is connected to the network.

  2. Verify that you have network connectivity to an Active Directory domain controller.

  3. Specify an Active Directory domain controller in the Exchange Server Analyzer.

  4. Use the PING command to see whether the Exchange Server computer is reachable.

  5. If there is a firewall, check to see whether RPC ports are blocked.

  6. Examine the permissions for the account under which the Exchange Server Analyzer is running. The account under which the Exchange Server Analyzer is running must have local Administrator permissions on each Exchange Server computer that it scans.
