How to apply the SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate patch

Summary: Learn how to install SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Patch from SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2.

SharePoint Server 2016 offers new improvements that will simplify the patching and upgrade experience to keep the SharePoint Server 2016 deployment current. Customers using SharePoint Server 2016 will be able to patch their deployment without the need to schedule down time and preserve the availability of the farm during this update process.

This article describes how to patch from SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 to SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate.

How to perform a patch

One of the new features in SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate is zero downtime patching.

To take advantage of this new functionality, you must perform the following steps in this order:

  1. Download SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 from the following location, SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2

  2. Download Language Packs for SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 for any additional languages you want to support from the following location, Language Packs for SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2

  3. Deploy SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 by following the Install Instructions located here, Language Packs for SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2

  4. Deploy Language Packs for SharePoint Server 2016 Beta 2 by following the steps here, Install or uninstall language packs for SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate

  5. Download the SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Prerequisite Installer file for your appropriate language see, SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Patch.

  6. Unzip the SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Prerequisite Installer ZIP file.

  7. Run the Prerequisiteinstaller.exe file to update the prerequisites installed on the server.

  8. Download the SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Global Patch.zip file see, SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Patch.

  9. Download the SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Language Patch.zip file for each language installed on your farm, including the base language and any additional language packs see, SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate Language Patch.

  10. To patch and upgrade the farm to the Release Candidate build, follow the instructions in the Install a software update for SharePoint Server 2016 Release Candidate.
