Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 is completely dependent upon Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to support its user interface, farm topology, and administration features. Office Project Server 2007 shares the same administration infrastructure as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. This common platform is manifest in common administration, deployment, and maintenance features that ultimately lead to tighter application integration and easier management. The benefits to your organization are more collaboration features and a reduction in the total cost of ownership over previous versions of Project Server.

Office Project Server 2007 is now a full-fledged member of a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 farm. Office Project Server 2007 middle-tier services are contained inside a Shared Services Provider in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 while the front-end Web servers are managed in the associated content Web applications.

Infrastructure

Project workspace sites can be created as children of any site in the Web application. They may be children of Microsoft Office Project Web Access, other project workspace sites, or even other Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 sites created from non-Project site templates. While this design is flexible, we recommend that project workspace sites be created as children of the Office Project Web Access site. Sites created within the same site collection (that is, under the Office Project Web Access site) share the same Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 content database and can benefit from the cross-site aggregation features of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. The Office Project Web Access site URL is the default path under which project workspace sites are created, enforcing organization of all projects' collaborative data in this manner. However, this default can be changed at any time in the Project Workspace Provisioning Settings page in Server Settings or programmatically through the Project Server Interface.

Each project may be linked to zero or one project workspace site, and that project workspace site must be created from the Project Workspace site template or include the Project Workspace Collaboration Lists feature. The link between projects and related workspaces is defined when the project is published, or through the Manage Project Workspaces page in the Server Settings page of Office Project Web Access.
