Unless otherwise noted, the information in this article applies to both Microsoft Search Server 2008 and Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.

During the indexing process, content items are accessed and read by the crawler. The process of extracting the information from these files results in a content index that is located in the file system of the index server and a Search database that is located in the database used by Search Server 2008. User search queries are run against this content index and the Search database. The articles in this section describe the default settings that are used by the crawler and what you can do to aid the crawling process and produce better search results for users.
