You can modify a search topology only if you selected the Server Farm installation option when you installed Microsoft Search Server 2010.

Microsoft Search Server 2010 Express is an entry-level enterprise search solution that has limited scalability. In Search Server 2010 Express, the topology components of each Search service application must be on one server. Although it is possible to add topology components on that server, in most cases it is not useful. In Search Server 2010, host distribution rules are used to associate a host with a specific crawl database. By default, hosts are load-balanced across crawl databases based on space availability. However, you may want to assign a host to a specific crawl database for availability and performance optimization. For more information about crawl databases, see Add or remove a crawl database (Search Server 2010).
To add a host distribution rule
Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Farm Administrators group.
In Central Administration, in the Application Management section, click Manage service applications.
On the Service Applications page, click the name of the Search service application to which you want to add a host distribution rule.
On the Search Administration page, in the Quick Launch, click Host Distribution Rules.
On the Host Distribution Rules page, click Add Distribution Rule.

If there is only one crawl database in the Search service application, you cannot add a host distribution rule, and this option will not appear.
On the Add Host Rule page, in the Hostname field, enter the name of the host to which this rule applies.
In the Distribution Configuration list, select the crawl database that you want to participate in the crawl of this host.
Click OK to add the new mirror query component to the job queue.
On the Host Distribution Rules page, click Apply Changes.
Click OK to apply the rule.
To remove a host distribution rule
Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Farm Administrators group.
In Central Administration, in the Application Management section, click Manage service applications.
On the Service Applications page, click the name of the Search service application from which you want to remove a host distribution rule.
On the Search Administration page, in the Quick Launch, click Host Distribution Rules.
On the Host Distribution Rules page, point to the host distribution rule that you want to delete, click the arrow that appears, and then click Delete.
In the message box that appears, click OK to add the removal of the host distribution rule to the job queue.
On the Host Distribution Rules page, click Apply Changes.
Click OK to delete the rule.
