Add multiple target or actual values to a PerformancePoint KPI

After you have created a PerformancePoint KPI, you can use PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer to add multiple target or actual values to that KPI. That way, overall performance is measured by a combination of values.

For example, suppose that a retail organization wants to see sales performance as measured by sales amounts and gross profit margins. You can configure a Sales KPI that displays sales amounts compared to quota alongside gross profit margins in a single row in the scorecard.

Configuring KPIs to use multiple Actual and Target values

When you extend a KPI by adding multiple or actual values to a KPI, you begin by opening an existing KPI for editing. Then, you use the Editor tab in the center pane of Dashboard Designer to additionally configure that KPI. Before you perform the procedures in this article, make sure that you have an existing KPI to configure. To create a KPI, see Create and configure a KPI by using Dashboard Designer.

Open a KPI for editing

To open a KPI for editing

  1. In Dashboard Designer, locate the Workspace Browser on the left side of the window, and then click PerformancePoint Content. The center pane displays two tabs: SharePoint and Workspace.

  2. Using the SharePoint and Workspace tabs, locate a KPI that you want to configure.

  3. Double-click the KPI that you want to configure to open it for editing.

Add multiple Actual and Target values to a PerformancePoint KPI

When you add multiple Actual and Target values to a KPI, you configure each new value separately. You configure each new Actual value by specifying the name, number formatting, data mapping, and calculation settings for that KPI. You configure each new Target value by specifying the name, number formatting, data mapping, indicator, and calculation settings.

To configure an additional Actual value

  1. In the center pane, on the Editor tab, in the Actual and Targets section, click New Actual.

  2. To edit the name of the new Actual value, in the Name column, click the current name of that value to highlight its text, and then type a new name.

  3. To specify how numeric values are displayed in a scorecard, take the following steps:

    1. In the Number Format column, click the hypertext to open the Format Numbers dialog box.

    2. Specify the format and other settings that you want to use for the value in the KPI.

    3. Click OK to close the Format Numbers dialog box.

  4. To specify the data source that you want to use for the new Actual value, take the following steps:

    1. In the Data Mappings column, click the hypertext. The Fixed Values Data Source Mapping dialog box opens.

    2. Click Change Source to open the Select a Data Source dialog box.

    3. Use the SharePoint Site, Workspace, and Calculated Metric tabs to locate the data source that you want to use.

      If you want to use a calculation that is based on a formula for the new Actual value, see Add calculated metrics to a PerformancePoint KPI. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

    4. After you have selected a data source, click OK to open the Dimensional Data Source Mapping dialog box. Then, use the Select a measure list to select an item, and click OK.

  5. To specify calculation settings for the new Actual value, take the following steps:

    1. In the Calculation column, click the hypertext to open the Calculation dialog box.

    2. Select the kind of calculation that you want to use, and then click OK.

  6. In the Workspace Browser, right-click the KPI, and then click Save.

To configure an additional Target value

  1. In the center pane, on the Editor tab, in the Actual and Targets section, click New Target.

  2. To edit the name of the new Target value, in the Name column, click the current name of that value to highlight its text, and then type a new name.

  3. To specify which value to compare to the new Target value, use the Compare to list to select an Actual value.

  4. To specify how numeric values are displayed in a scorecard, take the following steps:

    1. In the row that contains the new Target value, in the Number Format column, click the hypertext to open the Format Numbers dialog box.

    2. Specify the format and other settings that you want to use for the value in the KPI.

    3. Click OK to close the Format Numbers dialog box.

  5. To configure the indicator and scoring settings that are used by the new Target value, take the following steps:

    1. In the Target row, click the cell in the Indicators column.

      The Thresholds pane is enabled.

    2. In the Thresholds pane, verify that the correct settings are used for the various threshold values.

    3. To make any changes to the indicator and scoring settings, click Set Scoring Pattern and Indicator to open the Edit Banding Settings wizard.

    4. Use the wizard to specify the scoring pattern, indicator, and worst value for the KPI.

  6. To specify the data source that you want to use for the new Target value, take the following steps:

    1. In the Data Mappings column, click the hypertext. The Fixed Values Data Source Mapping dialog box opens.

    2. Click Change Source to open the Select a Data Source dialog box.

    3. Use the SharePoint Site, Workspace, and Calculated Metric tabs to locate the data source that you want to use.

      If you want to a use calculation that is based on a formula for the new Target value, see Add calculated metrics to a PerformancePoint KPI. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

    4. After you have selected a data source, click OK to open the Dimensional Data Source Mapping dialog box. Then, use the Select a measure list to select an item, and click OK.

  7. To specify calculation settings for the new Target value, take the following steps:

    1. In the Calculation column, click the hypertext to open the Calculation dialog box.

    2. Select the kind of calculation that you want to use, and then click OK.

  8. In the Workspace Browser, right-click the KPI, and then click Save.
