Remove a File Store

When you remove an existing file store, you must also remove all existing dependencies on the file store. After you remove the file store and you successfully publish the topology, you can remove the file share and directory, including all of the folder contents, by using the Windows Server process for removing a share and directory.

To remove a file store

  1. Log on to the computer where Topology Builder is installed as a member of the Domain Admins group and the RTCUniversalServerAdmins group.

  2. Start Topology Builder: Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Topology Builder.

  3. When Topology Builder prompts you to select the source of the Lync Server 2010 topology documents, click Download Topology from existing deployment, and then click OK.

  4. In Save Topology As, type a name for the topology document in File name, and then click Save.

  5. Expand File stores, and then click the file store that you want to remove.

  6. Reassign all dependent pools identified in File stores to another valid and published file store, if any dependencies exist.


    If you are removing or reconfiguring a portion of your deployment that has made the file store obsolete, you should remove the dependent servers prior to removing the file store.

  7. When Dependent pools property is set to none, indicating that you have removed all dependencies on the files store, right-click the file store that you want to remove, and then click Delete.


    If you accidentally delete the wrong object and you have not published the topology yet, right-click the Lync Server 2010 node, click Download Topology, and then click Yes in Confirm Download Topology.

  8. Publish the topology and check replication status.

  9. Open Lync Server Deployment Wizard on the server that is affected by the file store removal (for example, an existing file store was removed, a new file store was created and the Front End servers are now associated with the new file store location). Select Install or Update Lync Server System, select the Step 2: Setup or Remove Lync Server Components, and then click Run. Review the summary of changes, then click Finish.

    You must repeat the Lync Server Deployment Wizard Step 2: Setup or Remove Lync Server Components on each server affected by the change of file store location. Server roles affected by the relocation of the file store location:

    • Front End pool, Front End Servers

    • Standard Edition server

    • Director, Director pool

    • Archiving Servers
