Release Notes for this Beta Release of Windows Vista Service Pack 2

These release notes address late-breaking issues and information related to Windows Vista® Service Pack 2 (SP2). Unless otherwise specified, these notes apply to all editions of the Windows Vista operating system with SP2.

Installation

This issue affects the 64-bit editions of Windows Vista.

If your computer has not been restarted recently (in the last 24 days), the installer for this service pack may stop responding. This issue does not occur in slipstream installations.

To avoid this issue, restart the computer before you install this service pack. If this has already occurred, it is safe to restart the computer and rerun the service pack installer.

Aladdin eToken

If you install the Aladdin eToken security application after installing this service pack using any of the installation methods, the eToken application might not be able to detect the device.

To avoid this, install the Aladdin eToken device before you update your computer with this service pack.

If this has already occurred, use Device Manager to update the driver for the USB smart card reader.

To update the driver

  1. Start the Device Manager snap-in in Microsoft® Management Console (MMC).

  2. Right-click the Aladdin eToken USB smart card device in the left pane, and select Update Driver Software.

  3. In the dialog box that opens, click Browse my computer for driver software.

  4. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

  5. In the list of Common hardware types, click USB Smart Card reader, and then click Next.

  6. Complete the wizard.

Antivirus software

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.50 does not display the user interface correctly. Also, you may receive errors when you attempt to remove previous scan results.

To avoid this, install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.173 or later.

Disk Management

If you install this service pack by booting the computer from the installation media, disks may not appear for approximately two minutes when you choose a custom installation.

If you use Rescan disks in the MMC Disk Management snap-in or use the Rescan command in DiskPart, there is a delay of at least 45 seconds before the response.

To avoid this, you can use Regedit.exe to change the value of DisableReenumDelay to 1 in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vds.

Hyper-V

This issue affects Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Ultimate.

If you install this service pack and then attempt to install the Windows Vista SP1 Management Tools update for Hyper-V, installation of the update will fail.

To avoid this, install the Management Tools update before you install this service pack.

If this has already occurred, do any one of the following:

  • Uninstall SP2, install the Management Tools update, and then reinstall SP2.

  • Install the Management Tools on a computer running Windows Vista SP1, and manage Hyper-V from that computer

  • Manually install the Management Tools update.

To manually install the update

  1. Download the Management Tools update from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=122189.

  2. At a command prompt, run:

    Expand Windows6.0-KB952627-<x64|x86>.msu /f:Windows6.0-KB952627-<x64|x86>.cab c:\<targetdirectory>

  3. In the command prompt, run:

    pkgmgr /ip /m:Windows6.0-KB952627-<x64|x86>.cab

Input method editors

The input method editors (IMEs) for Traditional Chinese (Array and DaYi) and Simplified Chinese (QuanPin, ShaugnPin, and ZhengMa) now support reverse conversion and the ability to turn off associate phrases.

Spyware Doctor

If you are running Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Spyware Doctor 5.5.0.204, and you install SP2 and then attempt to uninstall SP2, the operating system generates an unexpected message on a blue screen.

To avoid this issue, install Spyware Doctor 6 (which is included in the latest Google update package) before you install SP2.

Updates

Installation of the following updates fails if you have already installed SP2:

  • Group Policy Preferences Client-Side Extensions

  • Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT)

  • JIS90 Fonts for Japanese Localization

To avoid this issue, install the update prior to installing SP2. If you have encountered this issue, and the update is required, uninstall SP2, install the update, and then reinstall the service pack.

Virtual CD

If you attempt to uninstall Virtual CD v9 after installing SP2, the process stops responding and fails.

To successfully uninstall Virtual CD v9 after you install or uninstall SP2, use Regedit.exe to delete the following key if it is present: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Wow6432Node. Then uninstall Virtual CD v9.
