Active Directory System Discovery

The Active Directory System Discovery method polls the specified Active Directory containers, such as domains and sites in an Active Directory domain controller, to discover computers. Active Directory System Discovery can also poll the specified Active Directory containers recursively. Active Directory System Discovery connects to each discovered computer to retrieve details about the computer. The Active Directory domain can be in mixed mode or native mode.

Note

  • Active Directory System Discovery does not create a DDR for computers to which it cannot connect. The DDR is created during a subsequent polling when connecting to the computer is possible.

The Active Directory System Discovery method gathers discovery information such as:

  • Computer name.

  • Active Directory container name.

  • IP address.

  • Active Directory site.

Active Directory System Discovery does not include the computer's operating system in its DDR. Other discovery methods (such as Heartbeat Discovery) set the operating system property for the resource.

SMS must have Read access to the containers that you specify for Active Directory System Discovery by using the SMS Service account or the site server computer account, depending on the security mode that SMS is running in. When the SMS Service account or site server computer account is used in domains other than the domain in which the site server is located, the account must have user rights on those domains. The account must at least be a member of the Domain Users group or local Users group on the domains.
