About the Site Repair Wizard
Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2
The Configuration Manager 2007 Site Repair Wizard performs complex recovery tasks that are difficult or impossible to perform by administrators manually. It is automatically installed during setup on all computers that have the Configuration Manager console installed and can be accessed from the Start menu or from the Configuration Manager console by right-clicking on a site name and selecting Repair Site from the context menu.
Although there is a task to create a backup of a Configuration Manager 2007 secondary site, you cannot restore this backup by using the Site Repair Wizard. Instead, you must reinstall the secondary site. The primary site will replicate secondary site data to the reinstalled secondary site.
For more information about installing secondary sites, see How to Install a Secondary Site.
When the Site Repair Wizard is run, it logs site repair information, which is written to the RepairWizard.log log file. This file is created in the <Configuration Manager 2007 program files>\AdminUI\AdminUILog directory when the Site Repair Wizard is started.
When recovering a site, you should use the site repair tool shipped with the product version that you are repairing. The Configuration Manager 2007 Site Repair Wizard does not support repairing SMS 2003 (or earlier) version sites and should not be used to attempt to recover objects from SMS 2003 (or earlier) version child sites.
Main Functions of the Site Repair Wizard
The Site Repair Wizard is meant to make the task of recovering a Configuration Manager 2007 site as simple as possible, while minimizing the off-line time associated with recovering a site. The main functions of the Site Repair Wizard are:
Shut down the site and site systems associated with the site
Restore the site database, registry, and site server files from backups created using the Backup ConfigMgr Site Server maintenance task
Synchronize and reset transaction serial numbers
When possible, recover changes made since the site backup used for recovery was made
Prompt the administrator for certain changes made since backup
Restart the site
Site Recovery Process
The Configuration Manager 2007 Site Repair Wizard uses a two-phase process to recover a site. Site recovery is divided into the restore phase and the repair phase:
In the restore phase, the Site Repair Wizard first stops the WMI service and all Configuration Manager 2007 services running on the site server. The site backup snapshot created by the Backup ConfigMgr Site Server maintenance task is then restored to the site server. During this phase, you can choose to restore the site manually (for example, if you have no backup or if an earlier automatic recovery process was unsuccessful) or have the wizard perform the restoration tasks automatically for you.
In the repair phase, the Site Repair Wizard repairs the recovered Configuration Manager 2007 hierarchy, recovers objects that were created after the site was backed up (such as collections, packages, and advertisements), and restarts site services.
You can run the Site Repair Wizard more than once on the restored site, which allows the completion of failed repair attempts and also allows you to start over if you need to.
While the Site Repair Wizard supports restoring a 32-bit Operating System backup onto a site server running a 64-bit Operating System; it does not support restoring a 64-bit Operating System backup onto a site system running a 32-bit Operating System.
The Site Repair Wizard maintains a record of the last time it was run on a Configuration Manager 2007 site. The previous run record is used to determine how the Site Repair Wizard is started the next time it is run:
If the site repair succeeded on the previous attempt, you are notified and given the option to run the Site Repair Wizard again from the beginning.
If the Site Repair Wizard failed, or was canceled during the repair phase of the previous attempt, you are notified and given the option to resume the repair where the wizard was interrupted.
If the Site Repair Wizard failed, or was canceled during the restore phase, the Site Repair Wizard will start again from the beginning the next time it is run.
