How to Install Windows Server Update Services 3.0
Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R3, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2
Before a software update point can successfully be installed and configured on a site system server in Configuration Manager 2007, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 must be installed on the server.
Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) requires WSUS 3.0 SP1 or WSUS 3.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2). WSUS 3.0 SP2 is required to support Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 software update management for the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems.
When the active software update point for a site is installed on a remote site system server, the WSUS 3.0 Administration Console must be installed on the site server. For more information, see How to Install the Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Administration Console.
Use the following procedure to plan for the WSUS 3.0 structure and to install WSUS 3.0 on a server that will be configured as a software update point.
To install WSUS 3.0 using the Setup wizard
Review Determine the Software Update Point Infrastructure to determine how many WSUS 3.0 servers need to be installed at the site and where in your environment they should be installed.
Download the WSUS installer file from the Windows Server Update Services Home Web page (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=88321) and save it to a location accessible from the server that will install WSUS.
Double-click the WSUS installation file.
Click Next, select Full server installation including Administration Console, and then click Next.
Click I accept the terms of the License agreement, and then click Next.
Select Store updates locally, specify the path, and then click Next.
Specify the software used to manage the WSUS 3.0 database. You can have WSUS install Windows Internal Database (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition), or you can configure WSUS to use SQL Server 2005 on a local or remote computer. By default, Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition (Windows) on this computer is selected. WSUS will create the Windows Internal Database or test the connection to the existing Microsoft SQL 2005 server and instance. Click Next.
Specify whether to use the existing Internet Information Services (IIS) Default Web site or to create a custom WSUS 3.0 Web site. When using the WSUS server for a software update point, it is recommended that Create a Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Web site is selected. By default, the custom WSUS Web site uses HTTP port 8530 and HTTPS (SSL) port 8531. Click Next.
Review the specified settings, and then click Next. When the wizard completes, click Finish.
The WSUS 3.0 configuration wizard automatically starts after the Setup wizard completes. Because Configuration Manager 2007 manages the WSUS settings, you should exit the configuration wizard after it opens.
