DPM Server Operating System Prerequisites
Applies To: Data Protection Manager, System Center Data Protection Manager 2007
Before installing DPM 2007 on the required operating systems listed in this section, note the following:
DPM 2007 supports 32-bit and x64-bit operating systems. DPM does not support ia64-bit operating systems.
The server cannot be the Management Server for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager.
DPM 2007 is designed to run on a dedicated, single-purpose server that cannot be either a domain controller or an application server.
There is a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) non-paged pool limitation on x86 32-bit operating systems. If you are protecting more than 10 terabytes (TB) of data, the DPM server must be running on a 64-bit operating system. In addition, because VSS non-paged pool usage is based on the size of a single volume, we recommend that you do not protect a single volume larger than 4 TB of data on 32-bit operating systems.
The DPM server must be running one of the following operating systems:
Windows Server 2008 (Standard and Enterprise Editions).
Windows Server 2008 R2 (Standard and Enterprise Editions).
Windows Storage Server 2008 (Standard, Enterprise, and Express Editions).
For complete protection on a Windows Server 2008 operating system, including system state protection, you must install Knowledge Base article 970867 “Description of the hotfix rollup package for System Center Data Protection Manager 2007” (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=163667) and DPM 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1). To download DPM 2007 SP1, see Description of System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=137147).
Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later.
Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 (Standard or Enterprise Editions).
Windows Advanced Server 2003 with SP2 or later.
Windows Storage Server 2003 with SP2 or later (Standard, Enterprise and Express Editions).
To obtain SP2 for Windows Storage Server 2003 or Windows Storage Server 2003 R2, contact your original equipment manufacturer.
Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 with SP2.
DPM Management Shell, an interactive command-line technology that supports task-based scripting is supported on the following operating systems:
Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and subsequent versions.
DPM Management Shell can be installed on computers other than the DPM server, enabling you to administer multiple DPM servers remotely.
