Installing the VMM Administrator Console

Before installing the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) Administrator Console, ensure that the computer meets the minimum hardware requirements and that all prerequisite software is installed. For more information about software and hardware requirements, see Virtual Machine Manager System Requirements (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69926).

You can install the System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) Administrator Console on the same computer as the VMM server or on a different computer.

Important

If you plan to use the monitoring and reporting feature of VMM, you must install a VMM Administrator Console on the same computer as the VMM server to enable Operations Manager Administrators to perform tasks on hosts and virtual machines from within the Server Virtualization Management Pack. When you install the VMM Administrator Console, Setup also installs the Windows PowerShell — Virtual Machine Manager command shell, which is required to perform these tasks. You can install one or more VMM Administrator Consoles on other computers.

Use the following procedures to install the VMM Administrator Console, and to open the VMM Administrator Console and connect to a VMM server. To perform these procedures, you must be an administrator on the computer.

To install the VMM Administrator Console

  1. On the product DVD or network share, double-click setup.exe.

  2. On the Setup menu, click Install VMM Administrator Console.

    Note

    If you have not installed Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, you must install it from within Setup before you can proceed.

  3. On the Prerequisites Check page, review any alerts or warnings about hardware that does not meet the minimum or recommended requirements or missing software prerequisites. You can continue if you receive warnings, but alerts must be resolved before you can proceed with the installation.

    Note

    If Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 is not already installed, Setup installs it automatically. Installing .NET Framework 3.0 does not interfere with the .NET Framework 2.0 components.

  4. On the Configuration Settings page, do one of the following:

    1. Click Next to use the default port setting (8100) for the VMM Administrator Console to communicate with the VMM server.

      Important

      It is a best practice to not use default settings.

    2. Assign a different port that you want to use for the VMM Administrator Console to communicate with the VMM server, and then click Next.

      Important

      The port settings that you assign for the VMM Administrator Console must identically match the port settings that you assigned for the VMM Administrator Console in the VMM server. For more information about assigning ports, see the "About Assigning Ports in VMM" topic (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=102100).

  5. On the Summary of Settings page, review your settings and do one of the following:

    1. Click Previous to change any settings.
    2. Click Install to install the VMM Administrator Console.

  6. On the Installation page, you can view the status of setup and after setup is complete, you can click the link in the Status window to check online for the latest VMM updates.

To open the VMM Administrator Console and connect to a VMM server

  1. On the Desktop, double-click SCVMM Admin Console icon.

    The Connect to Server dialog box opens the first time you open the console.

  2. In the Connect to Server dialog box, do one of the following:

    1. If you installed the VMM Administrator Console on the same computer as the VMM server, click Connect to connect to the local VMM server (localhost) using the port that you specified during setup. The default port setting is 8100.
    2. In the Server name box, type the name of the computer where the VMM server is installed, followed by a colon and the port that you specified during setup, and then click Connect.
