Security Basics for VMM

Applies To: Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 introduced role-based security, which provides finer control over who can do what within the virtualized environment. This security model supports delegated administration, which was not available in VMM 2007. Self-service user roles replace the self-service policies that were used to administer virtual machine self-service in VMM 2007. The topics in this section explain the implementation of role-based security in VMM, provide a summary of the ports and protocols that VMM uses, and provide a summary of the rights and permissions required to perform basic administrative tasks in VMM.
