Tip: Work with Pivot Tables in Excel 2010 the 2003 Way

Follow Our Daily Tips

In earlier versions of Excel, you could move fields around by dragging them right on the table. In Office 2010, you must work with the PivotTable Field List window—at least, by default. If you prefer the older, more direct way of working:

  • Right-click any cell in your PivotTable and select PivotTable Options.
  • In the PivotTable Options dialog box, click the Display tab.
  • Then select the Classic PivotTable Layout (Enables Dragging Of Fields In The Grid) check box.

Note, however, that this option also changes the appearance of your table from the compact, outline-style presentation of Excel 2010 to the more space-consuming, tabular style found in earlier versions.
