Roadmap to Deploying Mobile Device Manager

2/9/2009

This topic provides a roadmap outline for you to evaluate and deploy Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) 2008 Service Pack 1. Use the MDM 2008 SP1 planning and deployment checklists to help follow the steps through infrastructure configuration and MDM deployment. These checklists help make sure that you do not miss important steps in the deployment process. To review the checklists, see MDM Planning and Deployment Checklists in the MDM Planning Guide.

To understand and deploy MDM in your environment, follow these steps:

  1. Evaluate MDM. To download an MDM evaluation copy, see the MDM TechCenter Web page: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=107346.
  2. Review the documentation for MDM. Online documentation is included in the MDM Technical Library at this TechNet Web page: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=109297. Or, you can download one or more MDM Guides from the Download tab on the MDM TechCenter at this Web page: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=107346.
  3. Review the MDM Resource Kit Tools. MDM Resource Kit Tools can help you configure and deploy MDM. You can download the tools from the Download tab on the MDM TechCenter at this Web page: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=107346.
  4. Plan your MDM topology. Determine the topologies that you will implement for the perimeter network, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the computers that are running MDM, and other components. For more information about suggested topologies, see MDM System Topologies, MDM Server Topologies and MDM Multiple Instance Topologies in the MDM Planning Guide.
  5. Develop a configuration and deployment plan. To review checklists that can help you plan MDM preparation and deployment, see MDM Planning and Deployment Checklists in the MDM Planning Guide.
  6. Install and configure infrastructure components in your company IT environment. Because MDM takes advantage of many technologies to provide a more secure, end-to-end system, you must carefully plan for and configure the infrastructure for your organization before you deploy the MDM system. For more information, see Configuring Infrastructure for MDM Deployment in the MDM Planning Guide.
  7. Install MDM components in a test environment. For more information about MDM server installation and configuration instructions, see MDM Deployment Guide.
  8. Test the MDM installation. If you do not have the Windows Mobile devices that you will use in a production environment, investigate whether to use emulator software to help you test the installation. For more information, see Using Windows Mobile 6.1 Images on the Device Emulator with MDM.
  9. Install MDM in a production environment. For more information about MDM installation and configuration instructions, see the MDM Deployment Guide.
