MDM Backup and Recovery

You must regularly back up the underlying operating system for the System Center Mobile Device Manager system, Windows Server® 2003. You must also regularly back up the MDM system components: MDM Device Management Server, MDM Enrollment Server and MDM Gateway Server; and the supporting components: domain controllers, Microsoft enterprise certification authority and computers that are running Microsoft® SQL Server®, according to the best practices for Windows Server 2003.

This includes, but is not limited to, full system backups, incremental backups, and system state. Warning

Modifying the names of MDM Device Management Server and MDM Enrollment Server is not recommended nor supported. Doing so requires extensive changes to Active Directory, the certification authority, certificates on all Web sites, and SQL Server database tables. Similarly, you should not move an MDM server or SQL Server out of a domain and then try to rejoin the server to the domain. Instead, you should uninstall and reinstall the server as described in the articles listed under In This Section below.
