How to: Change the Default Editor

Visual SourceSafe allows you to specify the editor program used to view files, edit files and file comments, or view file differences. You can set the program using the SourceSafe Options dialog box, Custom Editors tab. Alternatively, you can set the Editor and Comment_Editor initialization variables directly in your Ss.ini file. The Visual SourceSafe editor is the default.

To change the editor:

  1. In Visual SourceSafe Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. In the SourceSafe Options dialog box, click the Custom Editors tab.

  3. In the Editor box, click an editor program that you want to use.

  4. Use the Command Line box to enter the path to the executable for the editor program.

  5. In the File Extension box, specify the file extension, for example, *.txt, for which to use the editor.

  6. Now use the Operation box to indicate the operation, for example, file viewing, for which you are setting up the editor.

  7. Click Add to add the editor program it to the list of available editors. You can also use the Delete button to remove custom editor specifications from the list.

  8. Repeat the procedure to set an editor for the remaining operations.

  9. Click OK.
