Client Installation Requirements

This section provides information about the installation requirements specific to installing, upgrading, or uninstalling Device Manager 2011 client on a device. All other requirements are the same as those for installing Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Advanced Client. The following table shows the system requirements for installing or upgrading Device Manager 2011 client.

Either of the following operating systems:
Configuration Manager Service Pack 2 (SP2) Advanced Client. For more information about how to manually install a Configuration Manager SP2 Advanced Client, see How to Install Configuration Manager Clients Manually on TechNet. Server installation of Device Manager 2011 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the server. If a device has either a RAM disk or partition that has no free disk space, make sure that the device manufacturer has applied a software update to address issues with managing such devices. The device manufacturer must apply this update or provide an updated operating system image that includes this update before you install Device Manager 2011 client on a device. To install or uninstall Device Manager 2011 client, you must disable write filters on the device; otherwise the device will revert to its previous state after the device is restarted. If the device has write filters enabled, request an updated operating system that includes Device Manager 2011 client from the device manufacturer instead of installing Device Manager 2011 client. You can install or uninstall Device Manager 2011 client after disabling write filters, but this scenario is not supported unless the operating system was purchased by your organization directly from Microsoft. You can disable write filters on a device by creating a script that will run the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) Manager or File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) Manager commands to disable write filters. Tip
If Device Manager 2011 with SP1 is installed on the server, you can have either the SP1 version of Device Manager 2011 client or Device Manager 2011 client with no service packs on the device.
