Step 8: Install and Configure HPC Pack on Another Server That Will Run Head Node Services

Applies To: Microsoft HPC Pack 2012, Microsoft HPC Pack 2012 R2

After you set up HPC Pack on one server, the next step is to set up HPC Pack on the other server (or servers, starting in HPC Pack 2012) in the failover cluster.

Important

Before you perform the following procedure, be sure that you review the considerations in Prepare to install HPC Pack on a server in the failover cluster in Step 6: Install HPC Pack on a Server that Will Run Head Node Services. The considerations include steps for removing individual user accounts from the local Administrators group on the servers in the failover cluster. Leave only group accounts (and optionally, the local Administrator account) in the local Administrators group before you install HPC Pack on another server in the failover cluster. For more information, see Step 6: Install HPC Pack on a Server that Will Run Head Node Services.

Install HPC Pack on another server in the failover cluster

When you run HPC Pack Setup, it detects that the server is configured for failover clustering, and it presents options as described in the following procedure.

To install HPC Pack on another server in the failover cluster

  1. Run HPC Pack Setup on the other server in the failover cluster from distribution media or from a network location.

    Important

Ensure that you use the original HPC Pack Setup files to install HPC Pack on another server in the failover cluster. You cannot install HPC Pack by using the files in the REMINST share on the first server in the failover cluster.

  2. If you are installing at least HPC Pack 2012, the HPC Pack Setup screen appears. (This screen does not appear when you install HPC Pack 2008 R2.) Click Add a new head node to an existing failover cluster.

  3. On the High Availability page (Head Node Installation in a Failover Cluster page for earlier versions of HPC Pack), click Next.

If you do not see this page, the Installation Wizard has not detected that the server that you are installing on is a part of a failover cluster. Cancel the installation and confirm that the process of creating the failover cluster succeeded.

  4. Continue to follow the steps in the installation wizard.

  5. When the Installation Complete wizard page appears, select Start HPC Cluster Manager, and then click Finish. If the installation was not successful, review your configuration.

Additional considerations

  • If you are installing at least HPC Pack 2012, you can repeat this procedure to install HPC Pack on additional servers that you have configured in the failover cluster.
