Registering the Service Connection Point

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

The service connection point (SCP) for RMS is used for service discovery and identifies the root cluster URL for the RMS service to RMS-enabled clients in your organization. Clients will not be able to discover RMS to request use licenses, publishing licenses, or rights account certificates without a valid SCP.

You can register the SCP URL for your root certification cluster from the RMS Service Connection Point page of the administration Web site. You can also unregister the SCP URL from the Service Connection Point page if you need to reset the URL for any reason. To register or unregister an SCP URL, you must be logged on with a valid domain user account that has sufficient privileges to create a container object underneath the Services container.

Under the services container in Active Directory, a new container object will be created named "RightsManagementServices." Under this container, an SCP object will be created named "MSRMRootCluster." This SCP object has two values for its keywords attribute:

  • MSRMRootCluster

  • 1.0

These are the attributes that are used by clients and other servers to find the root cluster URL in Active Directory. The serviceBindingInformation on the SCP object will contain the root cluster URL in the form http://clustername/\_wmcs/Certificatio.

For more information about registering the SCP, see "To Register a Service Connection Point" in this subject.
