RMS Configuration Database

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

RMS uses a database server, such as Microsoft® SQL Server 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A, Microsoft SQL Server 2005, or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition to store its configuration and policy information. There is one configuration database for each RMS cluster; this database stores, shares, and retrieves configuration data and other data.

The configuration database for the root cluster contains a list of Windows user identities and their rights account certificates. The certificate key pair is encrypted to the RMS server public key before it is stored in the database. The configuration databases for licensing-only clusters do not contain this information.

The RMS Service Group has Execute permissions on the database's stored procedures.

Important

It is recommended that MSDE 2000 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition be used to support RMS databases only in test environments because these products do not support any network interfaces. In addition, the terms of use for these specify that you cannot use SQL Server client tools to manipulate them. With this restriction you will be unable to view logging information or change data stored in the configuration database.
