Security Modes for RMS

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

RMS uses different security settings for the following three modes:

  • Setup: RMS files are installed and configured.

  • Provisioning: Web sites, virtual directories, and databases are created and configured.

  • Normal operations: Some services (such as account certification) require authentication, and others (such as machine activation) do not. When some services (such as Administration) are restricted, others (such as Licensing) are not.

During each mode, RMS gains access to different resources for different purposes. It also uses different security accounts, depending on the operations that it must perform. The remaining topics that are in this section describe security during the three modes; describe the operations that RMS performs; and describe the security accounts that it uses, as well as their access permissions.
