Access RSoP data for an existing computer and user (logging mode)

To access RSoP data for an existing computer and user (logging mode)

  1. Open Microsoft Management Console.

  2. Add a Resultant Set of Policy snap-in to a Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

  3. In the console tree, right-click Resultant Set of Policy, and then click Generate RSoP Data.

  4. In the Resultant Set of Policy Wizard, click Next.

  5. On the Mode Selection page, click Logging mode, and then click Next.

  6. On the Computer Selection page, specify the computer on which you want to run RSoP, and then click Next.

  7. On the User Selection page, specify the user for which you want to collect RSoP data, and then click Next.

  8. On the Summary of Selections page, click Next, and then wait for RSoP to finish processing the data.

  9. On the Completing the Resultant Set of Policy Wizard page, click Finish.

  10. In the console tree, click the newly created RSoP query to view the data.

Notes

  • To open Microsoft Management Console, click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.

  • The Resultant Set of Policy MMC snap-in runs the Resultant Set of Policy Wizard to generate Resultant Set of Policy (RSoP) data. On the last page of the Resultant Set of Policy Wizard, there is a Gather extended error information check box, which is selected by default. When this check box is selected, the Resultant Set of Policy MMC snap-in enumerates all of the events in the application event log of the target computer. This option is useful when you are using Logging mode because it allows you to collect error information on the client computers, where errors are more likely to occur. You can also use this option in Planning mode, which targets a domain controller, to collect error information in case the RSoP simulation on the domain controller experiences problems.

  • Selecting the Gather extended error information check box, slows down the processing speed. It is recommended that you use this option if errors appear in the RSoP snap-in after the first attempt. Errors that appear in Logging mode indicate problems that occurred on the target computer the last time that the application of Group Policy was attempted. In Planning mode, the errors might indicate an issue with incorrect permissions or other configuration issue with the domain controller targeted by the simulation.

  • Only users and computers that are currently logged on to the domain are visible.
