Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) uses options to pass additional Internet Protocol (IP) settings to DHCP clients on a network. Examples of DHCP options include:

  • The default gateway IP address
  • The Domain Name System (DNS) server IP address
  • The DNS domain name

You can configure options for an entire server, a scope, or for a single reserved client. If the server does not recognize the options sent by the client, it ignores the options.

Configure DHCP options on the server to match the client

Configure the DHCP server to recognize all options that the client sends.

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To identify the DHCP options requested by the client:

Caution: Incorrectly editing the registry might severely damage your computer. Before making changes to the registry, back up any valued data.

  1. At the DHCP client, click Start, in Start Search type cmd, and then press ENTER.
  2. Type regedit, and then press ENTER.
  3. Navigate the registry tree to the following entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp\Parameters\options
  4. Under options, compare the option number requested by the client with the options configured on the DHCP server.
  5. After comparing the option numbers, you can manage your DHCP options on the server or client so that they match.

Verify

Verify that your server options, scope-level options, and reserved client options match the client options.

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To view server options:

  1. At the DHCP server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DHCP.
  2. Right-click Server Options, and then click Configure Options.
  3. In the Server Options dialog box, verify that the options selected match the client options.
  4. In the Data Entry section of the Server Options dialog box, verify that the options parameters match the client, and then click OK.

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To view scope-level options:

  1. At the DHCP server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DHCP.
  2. Right-click Scope Options, and then click Configure Options.
  3. In the Scope Options dialog box, verify that the options selected match the client options.
  4. In the Data Entry section of the Scope Options dialog box, verify that the option parameters match the client, and then click OK.

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To view reserved client options:

  1. At the DHCP server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DHCP.
  2. Expand the scope that holds the reservation for which you want to verify options, and then expand Reservations.
  3. Right-click the reservation you want to verify, and then click Configure Options.
  4. In the Reservation Options dialog box, verify that the options selected match the client options.
  5. In the Data Entry section of the Reservation Options dialog box, verify that the option parameters match the client, and then click OK.
