Add Foreign Computers to a Site

Use this procedure to add foreign computers to a Message Queuing site.

You can use this procedure to add foreign computers to a Message Queuing site. You add a foreign computer to a site to expose a foreign messaging system to the MSMQ environment.

Membership in <Domain>\Domain Admins, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To add foreign computers to a Message Queuing site

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Sites and Services.

  2. On the View menu, click Show Services Node.

  3. In the console tree, right-click MsmqServices.

  4. Click New Foreign Computer to open the New Object – Foreign Computer dialog box.

  5. In the Computer name text box, type the name of the foreign computer.

  6. In the Foreign site list box, select the name of the foreign site to which the computer will be added from the list of available foreign sites.

Additional considerations

  • This procedure creates two objects in Active Directory Domain Services for the foreign computer. One is a computer object in the Computers container. This object is similar to an ordinary computer object. The other is an msmq (MSMQ Configuration) object, which is created under the computer object and contains a pointer to the foreign site in the MSMQ-Sites attribute.

  • You must create a foreign site before you can add a foreign computer to the site. For information about how to create a foreign site, see Create Foreign Sites.

  • Typing the name of a foreign computer in the New Foreign Computer dialog box does not guarantee that messages can be sent to it.

  • A routing link defines the route for connectivity between two sites. A site gate is a Message Queuing routing server or one of several such servers through which the message traffic between two sites is configured to pass. For more information about routing links, site gates, and how they are used to route messages, see Message Queuing Routing.

  • A Message Queuing routing server that is running a connector application and has been configured as a site gate for a routing link between its site and the foreign site must also be added to the foreign site. To do this, perform the following task:

    1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.

    2. On the View menu, click Users, Groups, and Computers as containers, and then click Advanced Features.

    3. In the console tree, right-click msmq (console tree location is: Active Directory Users and Computers/YourDomain/Domain Controllers/ApplicableServer/msmq).

    4. Click Properties.

    5. On the Sites page, select the foreign site under All sites, and then click Add to add this site to the list of sites where this server resides and to add it to the foreign site.

  • For Windows 2000 computers running a connector application, after adding the foreign site to the list of sites, the foreign site will not appear in the list until you restart the Message Queuing service on the domain controller of the domain to which the Message Queuing server running the connector application belongs.

  • Messages cannot be sent over HTTP transport to foreign computers.
