Configure the Domain Used for User Name Authentication

You can use this procedure to configure the domain that is used to authenticate user names that are submitted to Telnet Server by a client.

By default, if the Telnet server is a member of a domain, it sends names sent by Telnet Client to a domain controller in its own domain. If you change this value, Telnet Server can send user names to any domain trusted by the Telnet Server domain.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To change the domain used for user name authentication

  • At a command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    tlntadmn [\\server] **config dom=**DomainName

    • \\server

      The name of the computer running Telnet Server you want to change. If this parameter is not present, then the command runs against the Telnet Server service installed on the local computer.

    • **config dom=**DomainName

      Specifies the domain to which user names are sent for authentication.

Additional considerations

  • Tlntadmn.exe must be run at a command prompt that was started with the Run as administrator option. If you do not run it at an elevated command prompt, you receive an Access is denied message.

  • The Tlntadmn.exe tool is installed with Telnet Server, so it might not be present on a computer that does not have Telnet Server installed.

  • You can determine the current domain used by Telnet Server to authenticate user names by running the following command:

    tlntadmn [\\server]

    Windows displays several current settings, including the current domain.
