Characters and Lines on the Telnet Client Display are Misaligned

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

This problem causes text to appear in unexpected positions in the Telnet window.

Diagnosis

This problem can be caused by a mismatch between the size of the Telnet Client window and the maximum size of the command window that Telnet Server can support. The Telnet Client window size is determined by the settings of the command prompt window used to start the Telnet Client. The window size expected by the Telnet server is determined by the terminal emulation setting used in the current session. If Telnet is emulating an 80-column display, and your client window is narrower or wider than 80 columns, then text might wrap or fail to wrap as the server expects, resulting in a display that is not arranged as expected.

Resolution

Ensure that your Telnet Client window is set to a size that is expected by the Telnet server and the terminal type it is currently emulating.

To adjust your Telnet Client window size

  1. Click the Command Prompt icon in the upper left corner of the Telnet Client window, and then click Defaults or Properties:

    • If you select Defaults, which uses the server settings, you change the value for all command prompt windows started from the same shortcut as the window you are modifying.

    • If you select Properties, you affect only the current command prompt window.

  2. On the Layout tab, select the Window Size Width and Height values that match the terminal emulation in effect in your session. The default values of Width: 80 and Height: 25 work with most emulation settings.

  3. Click OK to save your changes.

  4. The screen size changes take effect immediately, therefore you might need to clear the screen (by using CLS or CLEAR, as appropriate for the shell you are running), or disconnect and reconnect your Telnet session to clear all the effects of the problem.
