Install Prerequisite Applications

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) requires that the following applications be installed on a computer running Windows Server 2008 Standard or Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (only for servers hosting the AD FS Web Agent) so that the computer can host the Federation Service, Federation Service Proxy, or AD FS Web Agent role services of AD FS:

  • Internet Information Services (IIS)

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

  • Microsoft ASP.NET (required for claims-aware applications only)

When you add the Web Server (IIS) server role, these three applications are installed.

Membership in Administrators, or equivalent, on the local computer is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review details about using the appropriate accounts and group memberships at Local and Domain Default Groups (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83477).

To add the Web Server (IIS) server role

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.

  2. Right-click Roles, and then click Add Roles to start the Add Roles Wizard.

  3. On the Before You Begin page, click Next.

  4. On the Select Server Roles page, select the Web Server (IIS) check box, and then follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the installation.
