Use this procedure to specify or view queue multicast addresses and ports.

You can use this procedure to specify or view queue multicast addresses and ports.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To specify or view queue multicast addresses and ports

  1. Click Start, point to Run, type compmgmt.msc, and press ENTER to display the Computer Management MMC console.

  2. In the console tree, right-click the applicable queue.

    • Computer Management/Services and Applications/Message Queuing/YourQueueFolder (such as Public Queues or Private Queues)/YourQueue

  3. Click Properties, and then click Multicast.

  4. Under Multicast address, type the multicast address and port number using the IP_Address:PortNumber syntax.

Additional considerations

  • A multicast address and a port number can be associated with any public or private queue. However, in workgroup mode, multicast addresses can be associated only with private queues, and in domain mode, a Windows Server 2003 or later family domain controller must be available to associate multicast addresses with public queues.

  • No spaces or leading zeros are allowed in the multicast address that you type.

  • IP multicast addresses must consist of four bytes and must lie in the class D range from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255. However, only certain ranges of addresses in this range are available for sending multicast messages. For more information, see Additional references.

  • You can also specify or view the multicast addresses and port numbers of queues using the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. For more information, see Additional references.

  • After setting the multicast properties of a remote queue, it may take up to 15 minutes for the change to take effect.

  • On a computer with multiple network adapters, a problem will arise when the computer tries to send multicast messages by means of these multiple network adapters. In effect, Message Queuing will randomly choose a network adapter for sending multicast messages. If the private network adapter is chosen, multicast recipients will not receive the message. To work around this issue, you can specify the source IP address to be used for sending multicast messages. To do this, create the string registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters\MulticastBindIP, in the usual IP address format. After setting the registry, restart the Message Queuing service for the changes to take effect. For more information, see IP Multicasting.

Warning

Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. It is recommended that you back up any valuable data on the computer before making changes to the registry.

  • Be aware of the security implications of multicasting. Messages cannot be encrypted, and messages could be read or used by unauthorized persons. Ensure that the address specified is used only for Message Queuing multicasting.
