Troubleshooting Routing

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

When troubleshooting routing, review the routing table on the source, each intermediate router, and the destination.

To view the routing table

  1. Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC snap-in.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand Your Server Name, expand either IPv4 or IPv6, and then right-click Static Routes.

  3. Click Show IP routing table.

To ensure that routers are sharing information with each other, examine the Protocol column in the routing table. If a value in that column shows anything other than Local, then the router is successfully receiving route information from other routers using routing protocols.

For more information about the information in the routing table, see How IPv4 Unicast Routing Works.
