Install the WSUS 3.0 SP2 Server Software Through the User Interface

You can manually install the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) 3.0 SP2 server software by using a user interface.

Before you install WSUS, you should follow these steps:

  1. For a summary of recent changes, enhancements, and bug fixes in this release of WSUS 3.0 SP2, see the Release Notes (WSUS 3.0 SP2).

  2. Confirm that the system meets the system requirements that are described in WSUS 3.0 SP2 System Requirements.

  3. Prepare the network and the server for WSUS as described in Prepare the Network and Server for WSUS 3.0 SP2.

Warning

WSUS Setup restarts Internet Information Services (IIS) without notification. This restart can disrupt existing websites. As a best practice, notify affected parties before you install WSUS. If IIS is not running, WSUS 3.0 SP2 Setup starts IIS.

Install the WSUS server software

Start the WSUS 3.0 SP2 installation by using one of the following methods:

  • Use Server Manager to start the WSUS installation

    If the server is connected to the Internet, and if it is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you can add WSUS as a server role by using Server Manager.

  • Use the WSUS Setup file to start the WSUS installation

    If the server is not connected to the Internet, or if the server is running Windows Server 2003, you can install WSUS by running the WSUS Setup program directly from the file system.

  • Use WSUS Dynamic Installer to install a WSUS server that is configured as a client of another WSUS server. This method is commonly used to install downstream WSUS servers.

Important

The WSUS 3.0 SP2 Dynamic Installer needs to be configured as an update, and it must be approved before it can be installed.

After you start the WSUS installation, you can complete the installation by following the instructions that are described in Complete the WSUS installation and configuration.

Use Server Manager to start the WSUS installation

You can install WSUS by using Server Manager if:

  • The server is connected to the Internet and is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, or

  • The server is configured as a client computer of another WSUS server where the WSUS Dynamic Installer is configured as an approved update.

To install WSUS 3.0 SP2 by using Server Manager

  1. Log on to the server by using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.

  3. In the right pane of Server Manager, right-click Roles, and then click Add Roles.

  4. On the Select Server Roles page, select the Windows Server Update Services check box, and then click Next.

Note

WSUS requires that the IIS and File Services roles be installed on the WSUS server. If they are not already installed, they will be added when you add the WSUS server role. For IIS, you are notified of this requirement before the WSUS installation continues. For more information about how to configure IIS for WSUS, see Configure Internet Information Services.

  1. Click Next on the following pages to add the server role.

Tip

If the WSUS installation starts but seems to stall, check the task bar on the server. It is likely that the WSUS Configuration Wizardis prompting you for input in a separate window. Open that window and continue with the installation.

  1. Complete the installation by following the instructions in Complete the WSUS installation and configuration.

Use the WSUS Setup file to start the WSUS installation

You can install WSUS by running the WSUS Setup program directly from the file system. In this case, all prerequisites must be installed and configured before you can successfully install WSUS.

If the server is not connected to the Internet, you can install WSUS on that server by following these steps:

  • Download the WSUS Setup software to a computer that is connected to the Internet.

  • Copy the WSUS Setup software to removable media.

  • Copy the WSUS Setup software from the removable media to the disconnected server.

  • Install WSUS on the disconnected server by using the following procedure.

To start the WSUS installation by using the WSUS Setup file

  1. Log on to the server by using an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start and then click Internet Explorer.

  3. Browse to the Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 Download Site.

  4. Select and download the WSUS 3.0 SP2 file that is appropriate for your environment:

    • WSUS30-KB972455-x86.exe

    • WSUS30-KB972455-x64.exe

    When you are prompted to run or save the file, click Save and save the download file to the local file system.

  5. When the download is finished, click Open Folder.

  6. Double-click the WSUS Setup installer file.

  7. If you get an Open File – Security Warning message, click Run to continue.

  8. Complete the installation by following the instructions at Complete the WSUS installation and configuration.

Complete the WSUS installation and configuration

After you start the WSUS Setup Wizard from Server Manager or from the WSUS Setup file, you can complete the installation by using the following procedure:

To continue to install WSUS 3.0 SP2

  1. On the License Agreement page, read the terms of the license agreement, click I accept the terms of the License agreement, and then click Next.

  2. On the Select Update Source page, specify the location from which client computers will obtain updates. By default, updates are stored in a specified location on the WSUS server. To require client computers to obtain approved updates from Microsoft Update, clear the Store updates locally check box.

  1. On the Database Options page, select the WSUS database. By default, the installation wizard creates and uses Windows® Internal Database.

    To specify a SQL Server database on the local server, click Use an existing database on this server, click the down-arrow, and select an existing local SQL Server database.

    To specify a SQL Server database on a remote server, click Use an existing database server on a remote computer and type the SQL Server database name into the text box. You can use a named instance or the default instance for the WSUS database. The name must be entered in the format serverName\instanceName, where:

    • serverName is the name of the remote server

    • instanceName is the name of the SQL Server database

Important

If you are installing WSUS to use SQL Server, the account that is used to install WSUS must have administrative privileges on SQL Server. This account must include the roles that are required to set up the WSUS database. The roles are dbcreator plus diskadmin, or sysadmin. By default, accounts that belong to the local Administrators group have the sysadmin role. When WSUS has successfully connected to the SQL Server database, you can continue the installation.

  1. On the Web Site Selection page, specify the WSUS website. By default, WSUS uses the default IIS website on port 80.

    We recommend that you create and use an alternative IIS website for WSUS on port 8530 (or port 8531). To use an alternative website, select Create a Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 Web site.

Tip

Make a note of the WSUS website name and port number. You will need this information to configure the client computers.

  1. After the WSUS installation is finished, you must configure WSUS. If you started the WSUS installation by using Server Roles, the WSUS Configuration Wizard automatically starts. If you started the WSUS installation by using the WSUS setup file, you can manually start the WSUS Configuration Wizard. You can also configure WSUS by using the WSUS Administration Console.
