Create a VPN connection in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 7

You can use this procedure to create a VPN connection to a remote network. A VPN connection is a method for allowing a computer to access a secured remote network by using a non-secure network, such as the Internet, that lies between them.

Any user account can be used to complete this procedure.

To create a VPN connection

  1. Click the Network icon in the task bar notification area, and then click Open Network and Sharing Center. Network and Sharing Center opens.

  2. In Change your network settings, click Set up a new connection or network. The Set up a new connection or network wizard opens.

  3. Follow the steps in the Set up a new connection or network wizard, selecting or typing all relevant VPN options, including either the IP address or fully qualified domain name of the VPN server to which you want to connect, and then click Create.

Note

To modify the properties of a VPN connection after you’ve created it, click the Network icon, right-click the VPN connection, and then click Properties. The VPN Connection Properties dialog box opens, and you can modify the VPN connection.
