Event ID 110 — AD RMS Cluster Installation

Installing the Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) server role is done by using Server Manager. An AD RMS cluster can be a single-server AD RMS installation or several AD RMS servers installed in a load-balancing environment to handle requests from AD RMS-enabled clients.

Grant access to AD RMS administrator account on configuration database server

When AD RMS is installed, an AD RMS configuration database is installed. This database holds the configuration data for the AD RMS cluster. If the configuration database cannot be installed during installation, AD RMS will not install. Make sure that the AD RMS configuration database is available on the network. If the configuration database is available on the network, make sure that the AD RMS administrator account (the user account installing AD RMS) has permissions to create databases on the database server and then install the AD RMS role by using Server Manager.

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the local Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

Check AD RMS configuration database network connectivity

To check AD RMS configuration database network connectivity:

  1. Log on to the AD RMS configuration database server.
  2. At a command prompt on the AD RMS configuration database server, type ipconfig /all. Make sure that the AD RMS logging database server has an IP address in the correct IP address range, and does not have an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address (an IP address in the 169.254.x.x range).
  3. At a command prompt on the AD RMS configuration database server, type ping localhost to verify that TCP/IP is installed and correctly configured on the local computer. If the ping is unsuccessful, this may indicate a corrupt TCP/IP stack or a problem with the network adapter.
  4. At a command prompt on the AD RMS configuration database server, type ping ip_address where ip_address is the IP address assigned to the computer. If you can ping the localhost address but not the local IP address, there may be an issue with the routing table or with the network adapter driver.
  5. At a command prompt on the AD RMS configuration database server, type ping dns_server where dns_server is the IP address for the DNS server. If there is more than one DNS server on your network, you should ping each one. If you cannot ping the DNS servers, this indicates a potential problem with the DNS servers, or the network in between the AD RMS configuration database server and the DNS servers.

Add the AD RMS administrator account to the System Administrators server role on the configuration database server

To add the AD RMS administrator account to the System Administrators server role on the configuration database server:

  1. Log on to the AD RMS configuration database server.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, click Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and then click SQL Server Management Studio.
  3. In the Server name box, type the name of the AD RMS configuration database server, and then click Connect.
  4. Expand Security, and then expand Logins.
  5. Right-click Logins, and then click New Login.
  6. Type the name of the installing user account in the Login name box, and then click OK.
  7. Expand Server Roles.
  8. Right-click sysadmin, and then click Properties.
  9. Click Add.
  10. In the Select Logins dialog box, type the name of the installing user account, and then click OK.
  11. Click OK to close the Server Role properties sheet.

Install the AD RMS role by using Server Manager

To install the AD RMS role by using Server Manager:

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
  2. In the Roles Summary section, click Add Roles, and then click Next.
  3. Select the Active Directory Rights Management Services check box, and then click Next.
  4. Complete the appropriate information in the AD RMS role wizard setup.
  5. Click Install.
  6. When the installation is complete, click Close.

Verify

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the local AD RMS Enterprise Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To verify that the AD RMS cluster installation is working properly:

  1. Log on to a server in the AD RMS cluster.
  2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Rights Management Services.
  3. Verify that the AD RMS cluster was added successfully by expanding the AD RMS cluster name.
