This section contains guidelines for deploying Windows SBS 2008 Premium. Although these factors may present some challenges in planning multiple-server scenarios, with advance planning, you can design and build a multiple-server network that is based on Windows SBS 2008 Premium.

Guidelines for Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium deployment

Windows SBS 2008 Premium is designed so that you can set up multiple servers in the Windows SBS 2008 network. Consider the following factors before you create a network domain that integrates multiple servers into a Windows SBS 2008 network.

If the Windows SBS 2008 network falls out of compliance, you might be notified by an alert, and then you have 21 days to fix the issue.

  • You can create and manage only one domain in your Windows SBS 2008 network Windows SBS 2008 restricts the Active Directory® Domain Service to one domain, with Windows SBS 2008 as the domain controller for the Active Directory forest.

  • You cannot establish trusts with other domains. This includes other Windows Small Business Server domains, Windows Server 2008 domains, and Windows Server 2003 domains.

  • You cannot create subdomains in your existing root domain (such as subdomain.contoso.local).

  • You can add only one additional server from Windows SBS 2008 Premium into a Windows SBS 2008 domain. The second server that comes with Windows SBS 2008 Premium must run only in a Windows SBS 2008 domain. You cannot use it as a standalone operating system that is not joined to the Windows SBS 2008 domain or promote it as the domain controller of a new domain in the Active Directory forest.

  • You cannot have more than 75 user or device client access licenses (CALs) associated with the server that is running Windows SBS 2008. If you require more than 50 user or device licenses, consider purchasing Windows EBS, which allows up to 250 user or device licenses.

  • You can add multiple (separately purchased) servers to a Windows SBS 2008 domain. The expanded client access license rights in Windows SBS 2008 allow client computers in the Windows SBS 2008 domain to access any number of servers running the Windows Server 2008, Exchange Server 2007, or SQL Server® 2008 operating systems without requiring additional respective CALs.

  • Any application that is included in Windows SBS 2008, such as Exchange Server 2007, is licensed to be installed only on the server that is running Windows SBS 2008. The only exception is the SQL Server operating system that is included in Windows SBS 2008 Premium, which is licensed to be installed for either the server that is running Windows SBS 2008 or the second server. You can add additional servers (separately purchased) to the Windows SBS 2008 domain and install other server applications on those servers. However, the Exchange Server 2007 license that is included in Windows SBS 2008 Standard or the SQL Server 2008 license that is included in Windows SBS 2008 Premium cannot be installed on those servers.
