Creating an iSCSI Target

Microsoft iSCSI Software Target includes the Create iSCSI Target Wizard, which you use to create an iSCSI target, and then specify the iSCSI initiator to which it is to be available. When you create an iSCSI target, you specify a name for the target, an optional description for the target, and one or more identifiers for the iSCSI initiator that is to have access to the iSCSI target. For each identifier, specify one or more of the following:
iSCSI qualified name (IQN) identifier
A worldwide unique name that each iSCSI initiator and iSCSI target must have. The IQN for an iSCSI initiator is available in Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator or other iSCSI initiators. Typically the IQN is used by the iSCSI target to identify the iSCSI initiator.

A single IQN is typically used as the identifier, but you can specify more than one IQN identifier, in addition to identifiers to be used for each iSCSI initiator.
DNS name
The fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the iSCSI initiator.
IP address
The IPv4 or IPv6 address of the iSCSI initiator.
MAC address
The media access control (MAC) address of the iSCSI initiator. Each network adapter on the iSCSI initiator has a unique MAC address. When you use the MAC address, format the number with dashes that separate the number pairs (such as xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx).
Note
You should have only one identifier per iSCSI initiator.
When you use Microsoft iSCSI Software Target in a failover cluster, you will assign each target to a specific resource group. The resource groups are created in Failover Cluster Management prior to creating the targets. The clustering environment must be configured before you create the iSCSI target for the resource group. Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review the details in "Additional considerations" in this topic.
To create an iSCSI target
In Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, in the console tree, click iSCSI Targets.
Expand Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, right-click iSCSI Targets, and then click Create iSCSI Target.
Follow the steps in the Create iSCSI Target Wizard. The Create iSCSI Target Wizard will prompt you for an IQN identifier for an initiator. Use the following procedure to view the IQN for a given iSCSI initiator.
To determine the IQN for an iSCSI initiator
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click iSCSI Initiator.
In the iSCSI Initiator Properties dialog box, click the Configuration tab. The inititiator IQN value is displayed under Initiator Name.
Additional considerations
You must be a member of the local Administrators group to perform these tasks.
To open iSCSI Software Target, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft iSCSI Software Target. (Another way to open iSCSI Software Target is to click Start, click Run, and then type iscsitarget.msc.)
