Links to Internet-based Resources that Are Found in Windows Movie Maker

In Windows Vista, if a user clicks Start, clicks All Programs or Programs, and then clicks Extras and Upgrades, a list of Internet-based resources appears. You can disable one of the Internet-based resources, Windows Anytime Upgrade, by specifying a registry setting.

Note

The items that appear in the Start menu and submenus can vary, depending on which operating system edition and language pack you use and whether the operating system was preinstalled by a computer manufacturer.

Under Extras and Upgrades, the following links might appear:

  • Small Business Resources. The link in the menu goes to the Microsoft Small Business Center:

  • Windows Anytime Upgrade. This menu item opens the Windows Anytime Upgrade interface, which provides information about Windows Vista Ultimate and simplifies the process of upgrading from Windows Vista Business (or other editions of Windows Vista) to Windows Vista Ultimate. The interface includes explicit prompts for beginning the upgrade process to Windows Vista Ultimate, including a link to a Web site where the user can purchase a download that is necessary before the upgrade can begin.

    To prevent users from upgrading to Windows Vista Ultimate, you can use a registry setting (described later in this section) or you can control the type of accounts that users log on with. If an account does not allow the user to install software (for example, if the account is a user account), it also does not allow the download that is necessary before the upgrade can begin.

  • Windows Web site. The link in the menu goes to:

This section describes several Internet-based resources found in Windows Movie Maker.

Note

Windows Vista Business N and Windows Vista Business KN do not include Windows Media Player (and related technologies) or Windows Movie Maker. If you install Windows Media Player 11 on these versions of Windows Vista, a software update will be automatically downloaded and installed from Windows Update. This update contains Windows Media Player (and related technologies) and Windows Movie Maker. Installing these features does not change the version name (Windows Vista Business N or Windows Vista Business KN).

Windows Movie Maker includes commands on the Help menu through which a user can display Web-based information or a Web-based privacy statement:

You can use Group Policy to prevent these Web-based displays. You can also use Group Policy to disable Windows Movie Maker.

You can use the following Group Policy Settings to control the display of links through Windows Movie Maker.

Note

If you want one of the following policy settings to apply to all users of a computer and to come into effect when the computer starts or when Group Policy is refreshed, use the setting under Computer Configuration. If you want one of the following policy settings to apply to users and to come into effect when users log on or when Group Policy is refreshed, use the setting under User Configuration.

  • To disable Windows Movie Maker: Under either Computer Configuration or User Configuration, in Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Movie Maker, enable Do not allow Windows Movie Maker to run.

  • To prevent Windows Movie Maker from displaying Web-based information or a Web-based privacy statement: Under either Computer Configuration or User Configuration, in Administrative Templates, System\Internet Communication Management\Internet Communication settings, enable Turn off Windows Movie Maker online Web links.

Important

You can also restrict Internet access for this and a number of other features by applying the Restrict Internet communication policy setting, which is located in Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management or in User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Internet Communication Management. For more information about this Group Policy and the policies that it controls, see Appendix C: Group Policy Settings Listed Under the Internet Communication Management Category in Windows Vista.

When you view one of the Movie Maker policy settings described in this subsection, Turn off Windows Movie Maker online Web links, you might also notice two other settings that seem to apply to Windows Movie Maker. However, these settings apply to a previous version of Windows Movie Maker, not the version of Windows Movie Maker in Windows Vista.
